First newsletter of the year finds quite a few excellent early items which are sure to feature in the year end list. It is our intention to specialise in the styles of country music which we personally prefer and as such we generally buck trends that tend to get rammed down our throats by those who don't have a clue as to what is good or not. Most of the music that is on the mainstream charts is not even good pop music. We probably have a lot of it, if that be your want. We just don't talk about it!

We always list a selection of cds we have in our bargain bin. Space constraints make it impossible to list all of them, but a full list does appear on our web site.

2005 Albums of the Year

1) Claude Diamond - Highway of Life $30 (see review next page)
2) Miss Leslie & Her Juke Jointers - "Honky Tonk Revival" $32 How could miss out on album of the year? It can only be explained by the sheer excellence of the preceding. This album rips and them some. Great Buck Owens style backing and top notch songs.
3) Billy Dee - "When the Vow Breaks" $32 Deep Dallas Wayne-like voice and packed with honky tonk gems include the glorious ode to the bottle on "Paper Sack".
4) Wrights - "Down This Road" $20 Husband & wife duo who show the majors can still produce gems. Great songs and both are excellent vocalists whether singing lead or in a duet capacity.
" Uncle" Alan Jackson adds his distinctive vocals on one track.
5) Marti Brom - "Sings Heartache Numbers" $32 100% country! A magic album. Every song has a number in the title. Poduction by Justin Trevino is just superb. Could be number 1 in any year.
6)Rick Sousley - "Patsy Proof" $30 The title track is one of the best you'll ever hear. The rest of the album ain't too damn shabby either.
7)Mike Rodgers- "Honky Tonk Hitman" $30 Takes a lot to be able to have a long tenure at Nashville's most famous honky tonk, "Tootsie's Orchid Lounge" but he pulled it off and this will show why.
8)John Prine - "Fair & Square" $30 A demi God, in fact it would be easy to drop the "demi" bit. First album of all new material since late 90s and in spite of several rather severe health scares shows he has lost nothing. Play it again, Sam!
9)Levi Mullen - "Hard Core Honky Tonk" $30 The title says it all. Pure & Simple. BUT...his early 2006 album is even better.
10)Justin Trevino - "More Music & Strong Wine" $32 It was a joy to see Justin & Amber Digby perform at Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL in November. This expanded version of an earlier album shows why he is already a legend in his Texas home state. Look out for Amber Digby's upcoming album to be produced by Justin and hopefully featuring at least a duet or two.

11)George Jones - "Hits I Missed" .....a few in the bargain bin at $20...basically $32. The voice is not what it was but style is some indeterminate thing which overrides such limitations and then some. Hear George sing classics such as "Too Cold at Home", "Here in the Real World" and "Funny How Time Slips Away"!

12)Gretchen Wilson - "All Jacked Up" $18 ....a major surprise as her first "Here for the Party" (save for a Bobbie Cryner style ballad) was the most overrated album of all time full of over the top rubbish which played firmly into the hands of those who hate country music and would be looking for something to illustrate that contempt. The opening track should be avoided but the rest of the album being spot on; the up-tempo numbers could be from a Heather Myles album whilst the ballads remind of the afore-mentioned Bobbie Cryner.

13)Leona Williams - "I Love You Because" $32 Singing as well as ever and the production of Justin Trevino couldn't be better.

14)John Williamson - "The Whiskey & the Highway" $32 NO NOT HIM!! This is a talented young man from Georgia who may have invented a sub-genre called honky tonk folk.....though it is definitely pure country.

15)LeeAnn Womack - "There's More Where That Came From" $30 a complete 100% turnaround from one of the worst albums of all time in "Something Worth Leaving Behind". This is the equal of her self titled debut!

15)Lonnie Spiker - Unapologetically Honky Tonk $32 Best ever album to use the word "Unapologetically" in its title. Grand regardless of the wordiness of the title!

15) Junior Brown - The Austin Experience $32 Better even than the Studio version...if only there was a dvd.

Best dvds

Two absolute gems.....
1) Texas Tornados - "Live In Austin" $35Freddy Fender/Doug Sahm/ Flaco Jiminez/Augie Meyers at the absolute peak of their powers. The sum of the whole actually exceeds the sum of the parts. Just hard to believe. If there is a better musical dvd than this one I haven't seen it.

2)Return to Sin City- A Tribute to Gram Parsons. $38 Just shaded and is mostly of uniform excellence except for an absolutely awful caterwauling gospel number featuring some redheaded buxom wench!!

Latest CDs

Claude Diamond - "Highway of Life"/ "Diamond Dust" $30 each
Imagine this rather Twilight Zone-ish scenario. You are visiting your friend in Chicago circa 2005. They tell you they are going round to the local hall to a once a month gig by their postman, John Prine. They explain that Prine once had the opportunity of pursuing fame but decided to remain a local personality. You are amazed at the songs this guy sings...one you think is called "Hello in There" and another about a fellow called "Sam Stone" or something like that. You comment he reminds you of your favourite artist, Claude Diamond, who has just released his 15th album, all of which have a big following in the folk/country field and has just won his second Grammy. Of course the situations are reversed. BUT, the old adage "There but for the grace of God go I", could very well apply. Make no mistake Claude is that good. Comparisons with the great John Prine are not over the top in the least. Indications are his songs are largely autobiographical and they cover a fair bit of ground from honky tonk to cajun. Obviously he has had a few demons ("Until I lose this cold cold feeling, I'm the last man on earth you need to know"....from "Diamond Dust"). Indeed a prominent theme is alcoholic excess which suggests Claude may have been a slow bloomer for a reason ...but these albums don't even suggest self pity. It is a warts and all look at a great talent. There is not a bad song over the course of two albums; there isn't even an average song over the course of two albums. "I Drop Quarters" from "Diamond Dust" is a straight ahead honky tonk number in which he concludes "There's truth in those old country songs, when my life is on the downside , I can't afford a shrink I play me some Haggard & Jones". Both albums are superbly recorded; ever bit as good as a major label release. It is artists like Claude Diamond who validate what I am doing; who make it all worthwhile. One or two "Claude Diamonds" a year would be great but he is an artist who only comes along every once in a while. "Diamond Dust" is from 2004 and "Highway of Life" is from 2005 and is thus unequivocally our album of the year. "Her Old Address" is a song about a torch he carries for a woman who has gone out of his life...he hangs on every ring of the phone but of course she isn't there. He grabs the phone on the first ring but is disappointed to be greeted by a man telling him it is time to renew his magazine subscription. You have to feel sorry for the guy! No happy ending here. Great stuff.

James M White - "Broken Spoke Legend" $30 This, as far as I know, is the first album from the owner and operator of Austin's most famous honky tonk, the "Broken Spoke". James has previously given his famous "Broken Spoke Rap" on albums by the likes of Alvin Crow & Cornell Hurd but this expanded version billed as "Broken Spoke Legend" will knock your socks off. This ain't pretty. The recording quality is rough, the singing is rough, the playing is spot on and the album is full of good humoured country music, similar in style to that of the other great Texas honky tonk owner, Arkey Blue. Backing is by some of Texas's most famous and best musicians with the incredibly talented Alvin Crow at the helm. Whilst mainly known as a fiddler, Alvin is equally adept on guitar. Also along for the ride are Herb Steiner, Earl Poole Ball, John X Reed & others. 6 of the 10 songs are by James White himself and are chock full of Texas honky tonk humour. Great and then some.

Lonnie Dean & Will Taylor - "Texas Honky Tonk Shuffles" $32 Finally got to meet Bayard from Perth. Unfortunately this only arrived a day or two after Bayard left our fair city. Bayard would always ask me what I had in the line of Texas honky tonk shuffles and whilst he was never disappointed this is an absolute landmark of that wonderful sub-genre. These two are father and son and both have excellent voices. Each do 9 tracks (yes 18 track cd) with Lonnie having the more traditional vocal style. Several of the songs have been associated with Ray Price but are not overworked nor hackneyed. In fact they all sound remarkably fresh. There are some originals to round the set out. It has it all; twin fiddles and steel guitar by Curtis Randall and Junior Knight.
Will be extraordinarily popular and I can already see the Swedish Cowboy planting it at the top of his best of list and I won't even argue if he chooses it on his 2005 list...he cheats sometimes you know!

Levi Mullen - "Texas Honky Tonk" $30 Third album by the Texas honky tonk guitarist/singer who has been associated with classic albums from the likes of Amber Digby and Justin Trevino. As with those albums, the great Dickie Overby proves himself as good as anyone who has ever sat in front of a steel guitar. 11 original songs right up to the standard of his two previous gems. Yes folks, it doesn't get much better than this.

Hank Thompson - My Personal Favourites $25
Hank Thompson & The Brazos Valley Boys - The Instrumentals $32
One of my favourite artists has recently turned 80 and is still in fine voice. The first album also includes some rare tracks from the 1952 Grand Ol Opry appearances by Hank in which the host was none other than the "other" Hank, Hank Williams. What makes these songs so special is the banter and obvious comradery that exists been the two Hanks. The recent recordings include a cover of Cindy Walker's "You're From Texas", the Jimmie Davis/Stuart Hamblen classic "My Mary" and even a Hank Thompson song written in 1956 but never previously recorded ("Dial L-O-V-E for Me"). "Operation Blues" has some slightly risque lyrics, well they were in 1947 when written by Homer Clement. We should rejoice that Hank, a true legend is still able to perform at this standard.
The Instrumental album consists of 26 Capitol recordings recorded between 1954 and 1962. All sound as though they could have been recorded yesterday. Capitol were always at the forefront of the hi-fidelity scale of things. The notes are rather brief and apart from the mention that Merle Travis played guitar no musician credits are given though you can guarantee they did feature the likes of Curly Chalker on steel and Keith Coleman & Curly Lewis on fiddle.

Jody Nix - "Play Me Something I Can Swing To" $32 Son of Texas western swing legend Hoyle Nix, who may be best known for "playing" Bob Wills on the "For the Last Time Album". Nix is a fine vocalist as well as being on of the twin fiddlers. He presents a very authentic approach and whilst there is only one original (the title cut) he steers clear of the songs that seemingly everybody does, though I guess you could say that about "Night Life", though none of the other 11 tracks approach that song in terms of familiarity. A must for western swing buffs. This stuff is hard to get nowadays!

Garth Brooks - "Limited Series Box Set" $90 Not available outside USA...only sold in Walmart stores with no export sales. But we have them. Contains some sure to be sought material for those who would still claim to be a Garth Brooks' fan. Contains the albums "Sevens", "Scarecrow" and "Double Live" plus a 68 page book PLUS "The Lost Sessions" cd with 11 previously unreleased tracks, including the recent "to radio only" tribute song to Chris Ledoux, "Good Ride Cowboy". The dvd contains over 90 minutes of concert footage interspersed with music videos and interviews. Limited edition of 4 million so be quick.

Kevin Banford - "Between Heaven & L.A." $30 Second and much anticipated album by a west coast artist who is primarily influence by the Bakersfield sound as perpetuated by the likes of Dwight Yoakam and Dale Watson. As you may expect there is a lot of twangy up tempo honky tonk, extremely well played. His band is actually called the Bakersfield Boys and I must admit though many are not well known they sure can play. He even puts a biblical image on the state of country music in general; "High Time for the Comin' of Hank". The title track is about the country boy living in the city. There are a lot of excellent artists in Los Angeles who could/should be better name. Artists such as Rick Shea, Kathy Robertson, Chris Gaffney, Cody Bryant and certainly not least Kevin Banford.

Clint Moody - "Back to the Basics" $30 One of, if not the, most popular independent artist we have ever had was Benny Berry. Originally on Hawk Records in Northern Ireland he had a voice that had most people do a double take. What Merle Haggard album is that? Or so the uninitiated would think. I don't think Benny sounded like Haggard...but he was just grand BUT I do think Clint sounds like Benny. Like a lot of independent artists Clint doesn't have a major label look (...in other words he doesn't look like a flamenco dancer in a cowboy hat), but what a voice. He wrote 3 of the tracks and they blend in well. The opener, "Lonely Door" is likely to stop a country fan in their tracks. One thing about this album which will certainly be noticed is the fine musicianship displayed and when you look at the line up, wow! Hargus Robbins on piano, Buddy Spicher on fiddle (and also producer), Pete Wade on guitar and holy dooley(!) Buddy Emmons on steel guitar.

Felicity Urquhart - "My Life" $30 Felicity has long been the best female country music vocalist in Australia but has seen much less talented vocalists carry away awards. I don't know why. She has been loyal to Tamworth, which they tell us is the heart and soul of Australian country music, and based on the fact that they have the biggest annual gathering of people supposedly for that means I guess that is pretty valid. But I still feel Felicity has been poorly guided as far as recording goes. I have previously cited her recording of the song "Planet of Love" as an example of what not to push and I don't believe that this album has the melodic strength to change things. Songwriting is a strange thing. It seems that every Australian artist sees themselves as one and generally, in that respect, they are not worth a tinker's cuss. I have played this album and I am disappointed in it as I would be an Adam Gilchrist duck. It is like a single song. The backing is textured and colourless. Nothing grabs you even for a moment. I like everything about Felicity...except this album.

Tom T Hall - "In Search of a Song/ The Rhymer & Other Five & Dimers". $34 This UK 2-fer is an excellent companion to the 2cds on Bear Family which feature his first 4 albums. These are a little out of sequence but capture him at the very height of his song-writing powers. Like all songwriters he is bound to hit flat spots but truly there are none on this cd. The stories are probably well known to most. "Who's Gonna Feed Them Hogs" tells of the miraculous recovery, from a terminal illness, of a farmer intent only on seeing his precious pigs. "Trip to Hyden" is about a visit to a town where only one miner out of 40 survived a mining disaster. Even in a town struck down by disaster someone will always try and profit. "Tulsa Telephone Book" is a bit of a throwaway of a brief fling with a Tulsa lady by the name of Shirley; pity he doesn't know her last name. "It Sure Can Get Cold in Des Moines" is remarkable even if only for Tom's amazing powers of observation. "Kentucky, February 27, 1973" is Tom's conversation with a gent imparting his country wisdom. "Ramona's Revenge" is about a handicapped girl who couldn't write or speak. "Too Many Do-Goods" is just as true today as when written. Two bonus tracks have been added giving a total of 24 tracks. Everyone knows songs such as "The Year Clayton Delaney Died", "Ravishing Ruby" etc. It is the songs we are not so familiar with that makes this so worthwhile!.

dvd Ricky Nelson - Sings $38 Although initially a non-singing member of the "Ozzie & Harriet" television show Ricky was a genuinely talented superstar who would have probably developed his career even further had it not been for the tragic plane crash that claimed his life. The dvd features a documentary plus 20 songs from the Ozzie & Harriet Show, many of which also feature a young James Burton on guitar. Burton also appears in the documentary side of things. There are some great anecdotes eg Ricky had dropped the "y" some time in the 60s but had added it back just before he died following a meeting with his hero, Carl Perkins, who had referred to him as "Ricky". "If it's good enough for Carl, it's good enough for me!" said Rick(y). All the hits are here and "Travellin' Man" may have even been the first rock video.
As a bonus the Nelson boys perform a version of Garden Party. Sam Nelson, not normally a singer is uncannily like his father. Twins Gunnar and Matthew, who had hits as "Nelson" perform "It's Late" and "Believe What You Say" with James Burton. Some of the information given stretches the truth a little (eg "I'm Walkin'" sold 700,000 copies in 5 months and not a million in a week as is claimed). Regardless, this is a fascinating and extremely well produced dvd. Whatever you thought of Ricky Nelson, I can guarantee it will be enhanced after viewing this.

John Anderson - "Wild & Blue" $28 Reissue of a fabulous album. It serves two purposes; the first is to illustrate how great country music was in the 80s and secondly serves to show what a superb vocalist John Anderson is. Although the album is probably best known for the uptempo song "Swingin'" the true strengths lie in the ballads of which the duet with Emmylou, "The Waltz You Saved for Me" and "She Never Looked That Good When She Was Mine" are superb. It has it all. "Disappearing Farmer" is the obligatory social conscience song and the good news is that the remaster sounds better than the original album. Great stuff!! This was on cd & deleted before I even opened the store in 1989. The few copies I had over the years sold for over $40. Absolute gem!

Brenda Lee - "he Definitive Collection"$32 Extensive 28 track compilation which actually doesn't go for the usual tracks. The only woman who is a member of both the rock and roll and country music Halls of Fame. Although she had been produced by the great Owen Bradley she only had her first country Top 40 hit in 1973 with a version of the great Kristofferson song (and also covered by Frank Sinatra), "Nobody Wins". Nice sound and notes by Robert Oermann.

Lee Clayton - The Essential 1978-1981 $32 Lee is probably best known for writing the song "Ladies Love Outlaws" , a huge hit for Waylon Jennings in 1972 and one of the pivotal songs of the whole Outlaw movement, with which Clayton would also be associated. He always rocked a little bit more and had more of an edge than most. The best known song from this set is "Silver Stallion", which was made popular by the Highwaymen. This set comprises tracks from the albums "Border Affair", "Naked Child", "The Dream Goes On". 16 tracks and over 70 minutes. Certainly political correctness was not a strong point with tracks such as "A Little Cocaine", "Tequila is Addictive" and "Jaded Virgin" being typical of Clayton's output.

Hank Sasaki - One Country $30 Frequent and popular visitor to Tamworth ,Hank sings with a passion that a few could take a real lesson from. As always he gives us a mix of originals and covers. The backing, as always, is excellent led by the steel guitar whiz, John Hughey. I am a bit dubious about a song "Hank, Lefty, Slim Dusty & Me" (maybe a Tamworth set favourite but not mine). The co-write with Billy Ray Reynolds, "Only a Memory Now" suits Hank's downhome delivery and unusual vibrato to a "t". He also does a fine job of Billy Ray's "It'll be Her" and even does a fine version of the gospel standard, "Where Could I Go But for the Lord". I think many people will find Hank's version of "Danny Boy" to be a life altering experience!

Jamey Johnson - The Dollar $30 This is sensational....in every way. Jamey has a voice to kill for; very deep and with unusual phrasing. He sounds like no-one else so he gets off to a flying start as far as I'm concerned. Whilst he can tell a good story, as on the title track, he is also a great hand at preserving that great country music staple, the honky tonk song. "Ray Ray's Juke Joint" and "Keepin' Up With the Jonesin'" are going to please all lovers of great country music whilst "Redneck Side of Me" touches on Hank Jnr style country rock. It is the ballads however that show his vocal skills to the fullest. "She's All Lady" and "My Saving Grace" are just as good as it gets. I think I'd have to go back to Mark Chesnutt's "Too Cold at Home" to recall a voice which has made such an immediate impact. He closes an almost perfect album with a gospel song, "Lead Me Home". As a label mate(+) of Catherine Britt this is a major label artist who shows that there is still hope for the Nashville mainstream and then some.

Rosanne Cash - Black Cadillac $32 I have never been a real fan of Rosanne Cash so just a fleeting report. This album is obviously a lyrical result of the death of the great man and the industry that has kind of risen out of the ashes, and I mean that in the nicest way possible. "Black Cadillac" finds her comparing the hearse taking Johnny's body away with the type of cars he always drove. Many of the songs are obviously about John. "House on the Lake", for example is about Johnny's Hendersonville abode. Apologies for the brevity.

Kimmie Rhodes - Ten Summers $32 The now deleted "West Texas Heaven" remains one of the all time great country music albums and whilst her duet album with Willie Nelson, "Picture in the Frame" is also 100% recommended, it still doesn't come close to "West Texas Heaven". However, the 14 tracks on this album will no doubt serve as a good introduction to anyone who is not privileged enough to own "West Texas Heaven". I found Kimmie to be a little too cosmic on her post "W.T.H." cds but she did come up with the great "Big Ol' Train". The album also features 2 duets with Emmylou.

Josh Turrner - Your Man $30 Like Jamey Johnson, Josh Turner has a voice and style which proves there is still hope for the majors. His previous album featured the superb "Long Black Train" and this time round the highlight track is "Me and God" which features a duet with Ralph Stanley. Slightly hackneyed lyrics indicate a semi obvious trend....as a performer Josh is a hell of a lot better singer than he is a writer. 4 of the 5 opening songs are written by the great Shawn Camp and are uniform in their high quality. It remains a mystery how Shawn Camp remains a virtually unknown artist; though from a royalties point of view he certainly wouldn't be complaining. "Loretta Lynn's Lincoln" is a great ditty. Of the Josh Turner originals the duet (both vocal and writing) with John Anderson is terrific. Anderson is still such a fine vocalist. Also great is Turner's cover of the Bob McDill classic "Lord Have Mercy on a Country Boy". Overall a very good second album. Turner's voice is a true joy but it mainly shines on the songs he didn't write.

Lucille Starr - The French Song $34 Canadian import containing 17 tracks of Edith Piaf inspired covers as well as French interpretations of pop songs and a few English cover songs. Interesting is a French version of the Kyu Sakamoto classic "Sukiyaki". This is the only place you'll get "The French Song". Overall it simply doesn't compare with the excellent album on Collectors Choice, "Side by Side/Lonely Street"....a steal at $25.

Mel McDaniel - "Reloaded" $30 This is a truly pleasant and welcome surprise and consists of 12 new songs which are a mix of re-recorded Capitol tracks and new songs, several of which were written by Trent Summar. Of the Capitol re-records the one that is personally most welcome is the extremely debauched classic, "Plastic Doll", making its first appearance on any cd. This wonderful ditty is all about "Wendy" his blow up plastic girl friend. You need to hear it to appreciate it.The vocals are as strong as ever as are his band, Oklahoma Wind. Full track listing: Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On/ Doo-Ma-Flatchey/ Help Me Make it Through the Night/ Louisiana Saturday Night/ Horseshoes & Hand Grenades (great!)/ Jukin'/ I Can Live With It If You Can Live Without It/ Shoeshine Man/ You Really Never Loved Her Anyway/ She Knows What to Do With a Saturday Night/ Plastic Girl (what a gem!!)/ Stand Up.

Joe Paul Nichols - Too Much Texas in Me $32 Excellent independent artist who records a lot of gospel albums and even though this is ostensibly not a gospel albums he still has a few tracks that are shall we say gospel-tinged ,notably "Little Boy's prayer". As always he is a very good judge of what constitutes great country material.

Linda Ronstadt - The Best of the Capitol Years 2cds $45 There was a period in the 70s when Linda Ronstadt was just about the biggest artist in America, and that success started with the album "Heart Like a Wheel" which is on the second cd and in its remastered form sounds just divine. Prior to her solo career she enjoyed some success as a member of the Stone Poneys who enjoyed tremendous success with their version of the great Michael Nesmith track, "Different Drum". This set includes her 4 Capitol albums. Apart from "Heart Like a Wheel", there is "Hand Sown, Hand Grown"/ "Silk Purse" and "Linda Ronstadt". There are also 5 previously unissued songs, of which 2 were recorded live at the Troubadour Club in Los Angeles.

Marty Stuart - Live at the Ryman $32 Third album in recent times by Mr Stuart finds him returning to his bluegrass roots (he started playing professionally in the 70s as a member of Lester Flatt's band). The veteran Josh Graves, on dobro, and Stuart Duncan on fiddle ably assist Marty as he works his way through some bluegrass standards ("Orange Blossom Special") and some Stuart originals which are given a bluegrass treatment. This suits "Hillbilly Rock" so well, that it is hard to believe it was done any other way. As with everything recorded at the Ryman (seemingly) the sound quality is A1.

Sonny Burgess - Stronger $30 Not to be confused with the great Sun artist, "young" Sonny Burgess is a Texan who has assembled a great bunch of musicians to assist on his second album, including Brent Mason on guitar, Dan Dugmore and Mike Johnson on steel and Larry Franklin and Rob Hajacos on fiddle. The songs are also very well chosen. Sonny is apparently not a writer and I only wish a few young Aussies who think they are, would take a lead from his book and go more for well chosen covers. Such an example is the fabulous "Jesus & Bartenders". This is the best version yet of the track which first appeared on Larry Cordle's "Murder on Music Row Album"....."Anger & Depression, tearful confessions....Jesus & bartenders hear it all". The album also contains apparently new songs from the likes of Aaron Barker and the mighty Paul Overstreet. Sonny is very astute in all the song choices, and a darn good singer to boot.

Liz Talley - Road to You $32 It is very hard to find consistently good female independent albums but Liz Talley has made one which comes darn close. She duets with the great Billy Yates on "It's Time to Cross That Bridge". A co-write with Leona Williams, "Texas In Your Swing" is as is suggested a catchy western swing number and again as suggested "Rockabilly Baby" is a hot rockabilly number. A couple of the ballads are a tad plodding but overall not bad.

Tom Morrell & the TimeWarp Top Hands - Monkey Bizness $32 Also known as "How the West Was Swung Vol. XIII" As always the best non pedal steel guitar picker in the business assembles an all-star cast and fans will be happy to know he has not altered his "unique" album covers or his penchant for allocating nicknames to all those who participate on the project. Thus the great Leon "Guard Dog" Rausch provides vocals on 2 numbers. Other vocalists include include Don "The Silver Fox" Edwards, Chris "O'Possum" O'Connell and Rebecca "The Reebok" Kilgore.

Chris Casello - "Done Moved On" $30 Chris is a member of the group Starlight Drifters and whilst I thought their stuff was okay I think this is outstanding. It has 15 tracks of which 7 are original. There are also 4 instrumentals including a version of Merle Travis' "Cannonball Rag". I guess the closest comparison would be to the likes of early Big Sandy & the Flyrite Boys or Deke Dickerson. Top stuff. The publicity says "15 tracks of Hillbilly Bop, western swing and rock and roll, with an emphasis on roll". One of the best of this style we have ever heard.

Lubbock Lights dvd $45 A documentary which includes 34 musical performances from the Flatlanders, collectively & individually, Terry Allen, Natalie Maines & the Dixie Chicks, Tom X Hancock plus a lot of Austin staples. This is not sold in stores so will be highly sought.

Old 97s _ Alive and Well 2cds $40 30 tracks.

Bear Family Recent arrivals

Bill Haley - "Rock & Roll Arrives - The Real Birth of Rock & Roll 1946-1954" $240 5 cds plus a 12x12 100pg hard cover book. This is one for country fans and rock and roll fans alike. It includes some things that have been only available on impossible to find bootleg records but also many things that have never seen the light of day. The early recordings show Haley to be the consummate hillbilly vocalist and a yodeller of the highest order (he learned a lot of his yodelling prowess from Kenny Roberts). It includes his very earliest recordings with the Four Aces of Western Swing, the Saddlemen and the Down Homers (with whom Kenny Roberts was a part time vocalist). A lot of these recordings had a rock and roll feel about them but his Essex Recordings went one step further and are generally acknowledged, at least, as the first true rock and roll recordings by a white artist. Some of the artists from these early days appear on all the recordings in this set.

Bill Haley - ROCKS! $35 Released to coincide with the 25th anniversary of his death, this is a classic single cd presentation of Haley's work and encompasses Decca and Essex recordings. Much of Haley's work was recorded with state of the art techniques which means they could not be improved on even today. They had the energy and Decca provided the skill. Over 30 tracks with a 40 page booklet in a classic digipak presentation. My only wish is that it had included "Joey's Song" a fabulous instrumental, the melody of which was stolen by Horst Jankowski on his number one hit "A Walk in the Black Forest".....would I lie to you?

Tompall Glaser - "My Notorious Youth - Hillbilly Central #1" $32
Tompall Glaser - "Another Log on the Fire - Hillbilly vCentral #2" $32
These 2 two-fers of the classic seventies recordings even includes one album which was only released in the UK, "Take the Singer with the Song". There is also a full cd of Shel Silverstein songs and whilst some tracks appear on the Collector's Choice cd "Very best of Tompall Glaser and the Glaser Brothers" ($25 and a must) such duplication is minimal. There are also some bonus tracks and notes based on recent interviews with the now reclusive Tompall. As always there are substantive booklets (36 & 40 pages respectively). There is no duplication with his earlier Bear Family cds, "The Rogue" and "The Outlaw", both also recommended.

Carl Butler - "I Wouldn't Change You If I Could" $32 Carl's empassioned vocals are probably best known when accompanying his wife Pearl on a gem such as "Don't Less me Cross Over". However, his career began well before his latter tenure with Columbia Records. These are in fact Columbia recordings between 1954 and 1958 and include the recordings he made with the Webster Brothers. 30 tracks embracing hard country music with some gospel, including, for many, the best ever version of "Angel Band".

Hal Lone Pine and Betty Cody - "On the Trail of the Lonesome Pine" $32 Over 30 songs from the Canadian legends who recorded in the USA with such artists as Chet Atkins, Jerry Byrd and George Barnes. Their son, Lenny Breau, a jazz guitarist extraordinaire was also featured on some of their recordings and young Lenny linked up with Chet Atkins to form a long friendship. Over 30 tracks and with a 32 page booklet.

Everly Brothers - The Outtakes $35
Janis Martin - The Outtakes, Plus $35
Another packaging innovation by Bear Family. The package resembles a Scotch Tape box and inside there is the cd plus substantive booklet. Trust me you'll be impressed. The Everly set will be delayed a little.

March Releases

These are end of March releases but I thought I'd put them in as I will have them as soon as they are out and some fall in the category of being almost too good to be true!

Gene Autry - "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" 9 cds + hard cover book. Expect this to be $360 but will confirm. The book will be a big mother! This brings together 225 tracks (11 hours) recorded between 1929 and 1933 and these represent all surviving recordings. More than 20 songs are issued for the first time ever. Autry was a match for Jimmie Rodgers but wrote original songs and developed his own style, which gravitated more towards hillbilly music rather than the country blues of Rodgers. Some of the earlier tracks had a ribald flavour about them, which seems tame nowadays but would have certainly shocked a few back then. If you want more details...track listings or whatever please let me know.

Red Foley - "Sugarfoot Rag; Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight" $32
The 30 songs featured here showcase the wild side of Red Foley. As with a lot of country performers of the day he recorded a lot of hillbilly boogie tracks, many of which had a semi rockabilly feel about them. On that front, Red's "Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy" had a similar feel to Ernie Ford's epic "Sixteen Tons". Also includes two previously unissued with r&b pianist, Cecil Gant. I wonder if future son-in-law, Pat Boone, modelled his version of "Wonderful Time Up There" (aka "Gospel Boogie") on that of Red. 79+minutes.

Pee Wee King - "Blue Suede Shows - Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight" $32 How could they be dancing to the "Tennessee Waltz" when the song hadn't even been written yet? An age old mystery. Naturally that song isn't here, as this set concentrates on the upbeat songs of Pee Wee and his crew. "Rag Mop", a cover of the Johhny Lee Wills was a big hit for Pee Wee. Their repertoire encompassed polkas, pop and country (with many boogies). Vocals were generally handled by Pee Wee and Redd Stewart but when the rock and roll phenomena hit Dick Glasser was brought in as an additional vocalist. Previously, Pee Wee's output was only available on cd as a box set. Sure to be very popular!

Jerry Lee lewis - Rocks! $35 33 tracks with the deluxe digipak packaging which have made this series so popular. It includes both Sun and Mercury recordings and at 79 minutes and 50 seconds is darn hard to beat.

Perry Como - "Jukebox Baby" $32 The early Bear Family cd. "Let's Go Jivin' to the Rock and Roll" featured several Como songs which were so irrepressably toe-tappingly irrestible that they were very popular among dancers and rock and roll afficiandos alike. This features 30 such numbers. It includes "Kewpie Doll", "Jukebox Baby", "Caterina", "Glendora", "A-Hubba-Hubba Hubba" etc. Bound to be popular.

Nat King Cole - "Stardust- The Complete Capitol Recordings 1955-1959" 298 tracks and 13 1/2 hours playing time. Expect it to be $420 but with the huge hard cover book it may be a little more. There will be another box issued later in the year to complete his Capitol output. It is still one of the ironies of life that the cigarettes which gave his voice its distinctive mellow tones ended up killing him at an all too young age.

This series again reaches new heights as far as packaging and presentation goes. Each has around an 80 page booklet in an attractive digipak and Bear guarantee the highest sound available. Highlights include:

Upcoming cds (all by end of February)

Hank Williams III "Straight to Hell" This is going to be a 2cd set. The first cd tracks are: "Straight to Hell", "Thrown Out of the Bar", "Things You Do to Me", "Country Heroes", "D Ray White", "Low Down", "Pills I Took", "Smoke & Wine", "My Drinking Problem", "Crazed Country Rebel", "Dick in Dixie", "Not everybody Likes Us", "Angel of Sin". It is right up there & maybe even better than his first two albums. The second disc only has two tracks but one, a hidden track, is 42 minutes long!!! Holy In-a-Gadda-da-Vida Robin! It includes some Hank Williams, some Wayne Hancock, some ZZTop and more. The named track on disc 2 is "Louisiana Stripes". Certainly the themes of rebelliousness, outlaw lifestyle and good old barroom honky tonk are not generally encouraged by the major Nashville labels and don't think this is not something of which young Shelton is fully aware. I expect it to be charged as a single disc, $32. It also comes with a parental advisory sticker, itself quite a rarity in country music circles. I expect it to be the most sought and also most discussed album of 2006.

Jesse Colter - "Out of the Ashes" $32 First album in 21 years with an interesting track selection: "His Eye is on the Sparrow", "You Can Pick ‘em", "Starman", "The Phoenix Rises", "Out of the Rain" (with vocals by Waylon Jennings! and Tony Joe White), "Velvet & Steel", "Rainy Day Women 12 & 35", "You Took Me By Surprise", "So Many Things", "The Canyon", "Never Got Over You", "Please Carry me Home". Shooter Jennings also contributes.

Alan Jackson - "Precious Memories" $30 First ever gospel album from Alan Jackson with 15 tracks, most of which are gospel standards such as "Softly & Tenderly", "Softly & Tenderly", "I'll Fly Away" and "Are You Washed in the Blood". Should be a fine addition to his already fine catalogue.

Terry Allen - "Pedal Steal" $32

Merle Haggard - "Live In Austin" cd $30/dvd $35 Next in the Austin City Limits series. These are late 80s recordings by Haggard. The best thing about this series is the superb sound and visual quality. Merle Haggard is the most consistently popular artist we carry.

Waylon Jennings " Live In Austin" cd$30/ dvd $35
Tony Joe White ‘ Live in Austin" cd $30 /dvd $35 Other February release in this fabulous series which looks like bringing out a threesome every couple of months.

Johnny Paycheck - "11 Months & 29 Days/Slide Off Your Satin Sheets" $32 2 on 1 reissue of 2 of his best Columbia albums. Hopefully they will also reissue his gem from that period, "Mr Hag Told My Story".

Wanda Jackson "I Remember Elvis" $32 As she showed on her last album she still has a lot of fire power. The go to track is certainly going to be the one "When I Was Elvis' Girlfriend"...a true story so we are told.

Garth Brooks - "The Lost Sessions" $32 The 11 track cd from the Limited edition box set is expanded to 17 tracks on this album which is again not sold outside the USA. The lead track is his tribute to his rodeo pal, and like the other 16 tracks has not been on any previous Brooks' album.

Mike Dekle - "Tunesmith" $32 I make no secret of the fact I believe Mike Dekle is one of the great singer-songwriters in the world. He has had tracks on the last 3 albums from Joe Nichols and each have been standouts. He reminds a little in style and substance of Paul Overstreet. He is also a victim of what I would call the incompetence of most reviewers. Reviewers are generally twits. An album such as this is likely to glean only a luke warm review whilst something weird and less deserving is liable to garner a much better review. In the overall scheme of things there are a lot of artists such as Thad Cockerell, Paul Burch, Neko Case and others of similar ilk who mainly get high ratings but in actuality are deserving of bottom scraping scores. Simply put the reviewer doesn't want to appear unhip. Mike Dekle is not hip. Talent overrides any notion of "Emperor's new Clothes" hipness and then some. His songs tell a story and they can tear at the heart strings. A previous song of his, "The Photograph", is one of the saddest, yet at the same time most uplifting songs I have ever heard. (a brilliant version of that song appears on the album by The Chapmans in our bluegrass bargains section). I have only heard a snippet off this album but already it has moved me. It is a song that reminds of "Nobody's Child", the old Hank Snow song, and indeed may be the "Nobody's Child" on this album. It is the story of an adoption and how the boy adapts to his new surroundings. Beautiful! Call me an old softie and I would not deny it for a moment. 14 new songs. Make that 14 great new songs. Mike is gifted with a great voice as well. He is also able to write some wonderful humour into his songs. It is time everybody knew about Mike Dekle. Just don't expect it to happen.

Certainly I will be jumping to Tani Allen & His Tennessee Pals' track just to hear, ‘When Hillbilly Willie Met Kitty from the City"....not to forget Reece Shipley's "Hillbilly Jive With a Hillbilly Beat".
